Beech, Fagus sylvatica

Beech is one of the most common trees of central and northern Greece. It grows at 800 - 1,600 m of altitude, forming pure or mixed forests. Its fine and short grain makes it an easy wood to work with, therefore it is a popular woodcutting tree. A beech forest is very dark and few species of plant are able to survive there, thus big animals can easily move around.
