Butcher's broom, Ruscus aculeatus

This low evergreen shrub occurs in woodlands, where it is tolerant of deep shade. The flat shoots, known as cladodes, give the appearance of stiff, spine-tipped leaves. Its fruit, red berries, are borne singly in the centre of the cladodes in summer.
