All human civilizations have had a complex and varied viewpoint of wolves. Its common name in continental Greece is “Zoulapi” (= animal), indicating that the wolf is “The animal”. The Mediterranean wolf is smaller than the ones in central Europe, with a lifespan of 20 years.
The wolf in Greece occupies a great variety of habitats, from degraded, hilly areas to densely forested mountains. It feeds on a variety of animals depending on their abundance, e.g. hares, sheep, dogs, small mammals etc. Nevertheless, it also consumes carrion and plants.
