Purple Heron, Ardea purpurea

This solitary and rare heron can be observed during migration in Crete and the Aegean region while a few pairs nest in reed-beds in the wetlands of Northern Greece. Ιt feeds in shallow water, spearing fish, frogs or insects with its long sharp bill.
